WiFi Sensing is being recognized globally as a powerful technology with the potential to revolutionize various industries from home security to smart homes to healthcare. As the technology continues to mature, we are witnessing a surge in commercial use cases that are poised to drive substantial market growth.
To help fuel that growth, Origin AI, the inventors of WiFi Sensing and Deutsche Telekom’s global partner, partnered with hubraum, a leading tech incubator owned and operated by Deutsche Telekom.
Origin AI provided its cutting-edge WiFi sensing technology to a group of promising start-up companies. In a three-month program, the startups innovated, integrating Origin’s WiFi Sensing capabilities into new systems and technologies.
Even as WiFi Sensing gains momentum commercially, hubraum’s Innovation Transfer Manager, Andreas Doenges, emphasized that WiFi Sensing is still in its infancy in terms of innovation. He expects it to become an increasingly prominent area of technology in the next few years – being used in home and business settings alike.
How does WiFi Sensing work?
Put simply, by utilizing and analyzing WiFi waves, we can now “see” movements and determine occupancy in spaces through simple signal changes. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
The results of the incubator were exciting and inspiring, proving that Wi-Fi Sensing can make everyday environments smarter and safer.
Inside the hubraum and Origin AI Wifi Sensing incubator
hubraum’s mission is to bring together startups, developers, ecosystem partners, and leading digital telco operators to spark innovation transfer and create business opportunities for all involved. hubraum and Deutsche Telekom invited Origin AI to participate in the program in 2024, and we could not wait to see how the innovators used WiFi Sensing in unique ways.
The program was exclusive, and slots were limited. From 1,000+ companies screened by the scouting team and 130+ companies engaged, Deutsche Telekom and Origin AI long-listed 24 and ultimately selected 10 finalists to participate. These startups, each bringing unique and innovative ideas, were tasked with enhancing their existing technologies by integrating Origin AI’s WiFi Sensing technology. Application use cases were split between home security (29%), health and wellness (32%), personal safety (17%), and other.
Mid-way through 2024, the program kicked off. Over a span of three months, the startups were challenged to develop novel use cases, combining Origin AI’s capabilities with their own to push the boundaries of innovation and enhance their existing ideas.
The goal of this collaboration was to empower these startups to unlock new possibilities, leveraging the advanced features of our WiFi Sensing technology to add significant functionality to their products.
During the program, the startups worked closely with ten seasoned mentors and Origin AI’s technical team, participating in regular feedback sessions and technical discussions. Participants also met with Origin and Deutsche Telekom commercial teams for strategy development meetings. This ensured they had the support needed to fully understand and implement WiFi Sensing technology into their use cases.
As the three-month timeline progressed, we saw tremendous creativity and dedication from each of the participating teams.
WiFi can do more: The innovative results of the program
At the end of the incubation period, the ten finalists pitched their ideas to Deutsche Telekom and Origin AI, focusing on the strength of their concepts, the use of WiFi Sensing, and the potential for real-world application.
Each finalist presented their case study at Deutsche Telekom’s headquarters in Bonn, showcasing the progress they had made during the program. These case studies illustrated how WiFi Sensing had enabled them to innovate further, whether by enhancing detection, enabling new smart features, or providing scalable solutions for broader market deployment.
The success of this incubator was not only in the technological advancements but also in the collaborative spirit that formed between the Deutsche Telekom and Origin AI teams and the startups. Together, we explored new possibilities, solved challenges, and discovered transformative applications of WiFi Sensing solutions.
The program participants represented the diversity of innovation—from smart home integrations to industrial IoT solutions to patient monitoring applications—and demonstrated how Origin AI’s technology could facilitate product development and bring groundbreaking ideas to market.
Looking ahead: commercialization of breakthrough technology
The global WiFi Sensing market is expected to experience significant growth in the coming years, driven by factors such as increasing demand for smart home solutions, rising adoption of IoT devices, and continued advancements in WiFi sensing technology, led by Origin AI. Some of the most promising areas for commercialization include home security, internet service provider (ISP) integration, and smart home connectivity.
Some of the best technical minds are hard at work, ready to meet the rising demand for WiFi Sensing applications. The hubraum incubator initiative marks the beginning of many more collaborative ventures, where Origin AI’s technology will continue to fuel innovation across industries and startup ecosystems.
The creativity and progress achieved in this short timeframe are a testament to the power of collaboration and the potential that Origin’s WiFi Sensing solutions hold for future innovators. The best is yet to come.
